This course provides an introduction to Queer Theory alongside five novels. We will develop an understanding of gender and sexuality that emphasizes shifting boundaries, and definitions that change depending on historical and cultural context. By thinking through the intersections between literature, gender, and sexuality, we will examine the connections between aesthetics and politics, discourse and society, story, and life.

Abstract:The use of multimedia has often been suggested as a teaching tool in foreign language teaching and learning. In foreign language education, exciting new multimedia applications have appeared over the last years, especially for young learners, but many of these do not seem to produce the desired effect in language development. This article looks into the theories of dual-coding (DCT) and multimedia learning (CTML) as the theoretical basis for the development of more effective digital tools with the use of films and subtitling. Bilingual dual-coding is also presented as a means of indirect access from one language to another and the different types of subtitling are explored regarding their effectiveness, especially in the field of short-term and long-term vocabulary recall and development. Finally, the article looks into some new alternative audiovisual tools that actively engage learners with films and subtitling, tailored towards vocabulary learning.Keywords: multimedia learning; dual-coding; subtitles; vocabulary acquisition

Touch is an American drama television series that ran on Fox from January 25, 2012, to May 10, 2013. The series was created by Tim Kring and starred Kiefer Sutherland.[1] During its first season the series aired regularly on Thursday nights beginning March 22, 2012.[2][3] Thirteen episodes were ordered for the first season,[4] with the two-episode season finale airing on Thursday, May 31, 2012.[5] On May 9, 2012, Fox renewed the show for a second season.[6] The second season was originally scheduled to begin Friday, October 26, 2012, but was pushed back to Friday, February 8, 2013.[7]

Yale Day of Data is a day-long event on September 20th (8:30am-7:00pm) that brings researchers together across the sciences and social sciences. Forced content illustrates the use of itts:forcedDisplay in an application in which a single document contains both hard of hearing captions and translated foreign language subtitles, using itts:forcedDisplay to display translation subtitles always, independently of whether the hard of hearing captions are displayed or hidden.

Figure 5 below illustrates the use of forced content, i.e. itts:forcedDisplay and displayForcedOnlyMode. The content with itts:forcedDisplay="true" is the French translation of the "High School" sign. The content with itts:forcedDisplay="false" are French subtitles capturing a voiceover.

When the user selects French as the playback language but does not select French subtitles, displayForcedOnlyMode is set to "true", causing the display of the sign translation, which is useful to any French speaker, but hiding the voiceover subtitles as the voiceover is heard in French.

If the user selects French as the playback language and also selects French subtitles, e.g. if the user is hard-of-hearing, displayForcedOnlyMode is set to "false", causing the display of both the sign translation and the voiceover subtitles.
